Chess is a game of discipline and logic. It requires choices, and every choice has a consequence. While you can start to PLAY the game with some basic instruction of how the pieces move, it it best to learn and master how to use each piece individually before you try to "PLAY a Game". You cannot learn everything at once. Do not get discouraged.
The game of CHESS is a competitive battle between two opponents. The objective is to use your pieces (army) to protect your king and attack your opponent. Checkmate means you have won the game. You never actually capture or remove the King from the board. You may play for hours during wich time most of the pieces are captured and removed from the board until you have only a few peices remaining. The game has three elements: a Beginning (Opening), Middle Game, and 'End Game'.
Chess is not always about winning - It is about Friendship and Fellowship. It has been said the best game of chess is one that ends in a DRAW or TIE since it means both players have been fairly matched. It is no fun if you always "LOSE". It is also no fun if there is no challenge for you and you always "WIN". Teaching someone else to play is also exciting and fun.
I like to start with a few pieces (End Game) and add pieces back little by little until I get to the original starting position. I have tried to organize the lessons in a sequential way so you learn on build on a good foundation.
Good Luck on your Learning Adventure.
