The New Bern Police Department is excited to sponsor the, “New Bern Noble Knights”.
This program is a partnership where officers, police employees, volunteers and other community members will participate to build and maintain stronger relationships with the youth.
Through coaching, mentoring and team building, our staff and volunteers will teach each student the basics of the game of chess and help them develop advanced skills.
Parents are welcome to participate and learn to play chess along with their children.
Members of the club will get to interact with and receive instruction from Nolan Tomboulian, a schoolteacher, licensed chess instructor and enthusiast.
Students will also get to play chess against New Bern Police Department staff.
There is no cost to join or participate in this club.
No prior knowledge of the game is required.
According to chess.com, playing the game not only brings people together, it teaches players sportsmanship, how to realize the consequences of their actions, develops creativity and problem-solving skills, and helps players learn to remain calm under pressure.
Participants can seek to advance and improve their United States Chess Federation ranking,
find enjoyment in the game,
and develop social skills and friendships.
Those who are interested in participating can download the application from the New Bern Police Department website using the Logo Link below and then submit it in person at the New Bern Police Station or bring it with you to the Rec Center when you come.
